Lindsay Beane - A Parent’s Story of Spina Bifida and Cystic Fibrosis

Lindsay Beane's son, Russell, was diagnosed with spina bifida (a neural tube defect) at birth in 1992. He was able to have it surgically corrected at 5 weeks old. Subsequently, he was then diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (a progressive, fatal, incurable disease of the endocrine system) at 8 months of age. This second diagnosis predicted that her son would be sick, get sicker, and die as a teen or young adult. Motivated to keep her son alive and well as long as possible, Lindsay began to explore alternative healing. During his first few years, with the help of five seasoned practitioners (acupuncture, homeopathy, nutrition, osteopathy, and herbal medicine), Russell was nearly fully recovered by the age of 4.

Today, by all accounts and against all odds and predictions, Russell is alive and well. At 31 years of age, He is 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, employed full-time, working on his second master's degree, and is active with tennis and hiking. In short, he leads a normal life with - now - a normal life expectancy.
